Sanctuary of the Madonna del Principio

Sanctuary of the Madonna del Principio

Nestled in the silence of the chestnut groves that surround the hamlet of Mandia, the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Principio is a little gem of spirituality and tradition in the Ascea area. Accessible via a picturesque path leading from the Church of St John the Baptist, this place of worship retains an intimate and secluded atmosphere, far from the more popular tourist routes.

The small church, built of stone and of ancient origin, houses a precious 16th-century stucco statue depicting the Madonna enthroned with the Child. The Child, in the act of holding the cross and imparting a blessing, evokes an iconography rich in meaning, traceable to the model of the ‘Odigitria’, or ‘she who shows the way’. An image that expresses guidance, protection and spiritual direction for the faithful.

The name “Madonna del Principio” has its roots in local tradition: according to popular belief, this sanctuary marked the starting point for pilgrimages to Mount Gelbison, one of the most important places of worship in the Cilento region. From here, pilgrims would set out on their journey, entrusting themselves to the protection of the Madonna before embarking on the journey.

Today, the sanctuary retains its authentic charm, characterised by architectural simplicity and profound spirituality. Visiting this place means immersing oneself in a natural setting of great beauty, where the silence of the woods and popular devotion blend together, offering an experience of peace and contemplation in the heart of Cilento.
