War Memorial

War Memorial

In the heart of Piazza Bovio, in the main town of Ascea, the War Memorial stands as one of the most significant landmarks in the village’s collective memory. Crafted from marble, the monument is dedicated to the citizens of Ascea who fell during the First World War and serves as a symbol of respect, sacrifice and shared identity.

The structure takes the form of an elegant obelisk resting on a solid base, topped by a five-pointed star that completes its slender, upward-reaching profile. On the front side is engraved the commemorative inscription, placed beneath a marble cross that reinforces the symbolic and spiritual significance of the monument. At the top stands a decorative wreath composed of oak and laurel branches, highly evocative elements: the oak symbolises strength and resilience, whilst the laurel represents glory and honour.

On the other sides of the monument are plaques bearing the names of the fallen, making this place not only an architectural landmark but also a space for personal and collective remembrance. The entire structure is set within a small enclosed flowerbed, which defines the space and helps to create an intimate and respectful atmosphere, inviting reflection.

Today, the War Memorial in Ascea remains a focal point for the community, serving as the venue for official commemorations and moments of reflection, as well as a tangible reminder of the history and sacrifice that have shaped the area.
