Perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the entire Mercure-Lao Valley, Viggianello is one of those villages that seem frozen in time, where history, nature and traditions coexist in perfect harmony. The houses climb up the ridge of Monte Serra, arranged in terraces, whilst the view opens out onto vast, wild landscapes, among the most evocative in southern Italy.

An authentic and charming historic centre

The ancient heart of the village is a maze of narrow streets, small squares and unexpected vistas, embellished by 18th-century carved stone doorways and elegant historic buildings. In the highest part stands the Castle, built during the Norman period on top of earlier Roman and Lombard structures, which for centuries served a strategic role in controlling the surrounding area.

Strolling through the streets of the town centre, one can still sense the legacy of the various ruling powers: from the Byzantines to the Normans, from the Swabians – with the presence of Frederick II of Swabia – to the great feudal families such as the Sanseverinos. All this contributes to creating a rich atmosphere, steeped in history and memory.

Unspoilt nature in Pollino National Park

Viggianello is situated in the heart of the Pollino National Park, one of Italy’s largest and wildest national parks. Here, nature takes centre stage: forests of beech, fir and chestnut trees alternate with plateaus and imposing peaks, providing an ideal habitat for numerous animal species such as the Apennine wolf and the otter.

The undisputed symbol of the area is the Loricato pine, a European botanical rarity that grows on the most inaccessible ridges, offering unique scenery, especially in the Serra di Crispo area, known as the ‘Garden of the Gods’.

The village is also a perfect starting point for hikes and outdoor activities: from the trails leading to Serra Mauro and the deer sanctuary , to the plateaus of Piano Ruggio, Colle Impiso and Piano Visitone. In winter, the snow transforms these places into a paradise for snowshoeing, whilst in summer and autumn, hiking, mushroom picking and chestnut gathering take centre stage.

Living traditions and ancient rituals

The true spirit of Viggianello is expressed through its folk traditions, which are still deeply cherished. Among the most evocative are the tree-related rituals associated with the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, featuring the characteristic ‘danza del falcetto’ (sickle dance), a ritual that evokes the harvest to the rhythm of the tarantella.

No less important are the celebrations dedicated to Saint Francis of Paola, the Good Friday processions and the pilgrimages to the Madonna dell’Alto, moments of intense collective participation that unite faith and local identity.

In spring, the village is cloaked in yellow thanks to the flowering broom, so much so that it is known as the “village of broom”, a natural spectacle that makes the landscape even more enchanting.

Authentic flavours of rural tradition

The cuisine of Viggianello tells the story of the local area through simple yet flavourful dishes rooted in rural tradition. Among the most representative specialities is the ‘rappasciona’, a soup made with white beans, sweetcorn and grains, considered one of the oldest vegan dishes in Italian tradition.

According to custom, it is prepared on New Year’s Eve and eaten on New Year’s Day as a symbol of prosperity and good fortune. A dish that encapsulates the essence of the village: authenticity, sharing and a deep connection to the land.

Viggianello is a place to be savoured at a leisurely pace, where every detail – from the views to the traditions, from the flavours to the history – contributes to creating an authentic experience. It is a village that is not merely to be visited, but one to be discovered step by step, amidst unspoilt nature and living history.
