Polish Military Cemetery

Polish Military Cemetery

Located along the parallel road running alongside State Road 100, on the stretch connecting Casamassima to Bari, the Polish Military Cemetery is one of the most significant memorial sites in Apulia. It is, in fact, one of four Polish cemeteries in Italy, alongside those at Montecassino, Bologna and Loreto, bearing witness to the sacrifice of Polish soldiers during the Second World War.

Within the cemetery lie 430 soldiers of the 2nd Polish Army Corps, whilst a symbolic grave commemorates Major Henryk Sucharski, who was initially buried here and later transferred to his homeland. The orderly rows of white crosses tell stories of courage and suffering, making this a deeply evocative and meaningful place.

The existence of the cemetery is closely linked to the history of Casamassima during the war: it was here, in fact, that the Polish expeditionary force established one of the most important military hospitals in southern Italy. Many soldiers, wounded in battle, did not survive and were buried here, far from their homeland.

Even today, the cemetery stands as a symbol of shared remembrance between Italy and Poland. Every year, on 2 November, to mark All Souls’ Day, the village of Casamassima and Polish institutions pay tribute to the fallen with a solemn and well-attended ceremony, keeping alive the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for freedom.

Visiting the Polish Military Cemetery means immersing oneself in a poignant chapter of European history, in a place where silence and remembrance invite reflection and respect.
