Ricetto di Candelo

Located in the heart of the province of Biella, the Ricetto di Candelo is an authentic architectural gem and an invaluable testimony to Italian medieval history. This fortified structure, dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries, is a perfect example of late medieval architecture, designed entirely by the local peasant community and unaffected by feudal powers. Its historical origins are rooted in the property of the noble Vialardi di Villanova family, a land redeemed by the people of Candelo who, in a time of unrest, sought a safe haven for their most precious assets: the products of the land, such as grain and wine.

The Ricetto di Candelo covers an area of approximately 13,000 square metres and has a pseudo-pentagonal layout, surrounded by sturdy defensive walls made of river pebbles, arranged in a herringbone pattern (opus spicatum) to ensure their solidity. Four round towers stand at the corners of the structure, while a square tower is located in the middle of the north side, each element well integrated into a defensive system designed to protect the community.

One of the most fascinating features of the Ricetto di Candelo is its state of preservation, considered one of the best in Europe. Unlike many other similar structures, which have undergone alterations or destruction over the centuries, the Ricetto has retained its agricultural and rural function, thus preserving its original appearance. This continuity of use has not only allowed its structures to survive, but has also created a magical atmosphere that transports visitors to an era of rural life that seems never to have disappeared. The historical and cultural importance of this place has been recognised internationally, attracting the attention of universities and researchers from all over the world.

Opting for a stroll through its ‘rues’, the narrow, winding streets that criss-cross the Ricetto, you immediately feel immersed in another time. At the entrance is Piazza Castello, where the Town Hall, dating back to 1819 and built in neoclassical style, invites reflection on the history of the local community. The visible defensive structures, such as the towers and the massive entrance gate, are equally impressive. Originally, the moat surrounding the castle and the ravelins were crucial defensive systems.

Continuing through the small internal square, visitors can admire the Palazzo del Principe, a building dating back to the end of the 15th century, which dominates the landscape. The internal streets, with their affectionate names such as ‘rue’, create a labyrinthine path which, although designed for practical and defensive reasons, today offers a poetic stroll among double-winged houses, characterised by thick cobblestone walls, protecting wine cellars and agricultural produce.

One of the main attractions of the area is its vibrant cultural life. Throughout the year, the Ricetto di Candelo hosts numerous events, including ‘Candelo in Fiore’, a flower show that highlights the beauty of the village, and ‘Sapor di Medioevo’, which celebrates the local culinary tradition. In addition, the international music competition “Ricetto in Musica”, dedicated to maestro Ernesto Falla, attracts talent from all over the world, making the Ricetto a lively destination that embodies contemporary culture while keeping its history alive.

Furthermore, since 2002, Ricetto di Candelo has been awarded the prestigious title of “Most Beautiful Village in Italy”, and in 2007 it received the “Orange Flag” from the Italian Touring Club, attesting to the quality of its cultural and natural heritage.
