Nestled on the green slopes of Mount Consolino, in the heart of the Stilaro Valley, Bivongi is one of the most authentic and surprising villages in Ionian Calabria. With its 1,150 inhabitants and an altitude of 270 metres above sea level, this small town in the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria has a thousand-year history and a distinction that has made it famous throughout the world: it is known as the ‘Village of Longevity’.
Here, life flows slowly, in balance with nature and human relationships. It is no coincidence that international studies on quality of life have identified Bivongi as one of the places in Italy where people live the longest. But longevity is not an esoteric mystery: it is the result of a healthy environment, a genuine Mediterranean diet, a close-knit community and a strong spiritual connection with the land.
A village with Byzantine roots
The origins of Bivongi date back to the 11th century, when Basilian monks chose these lands as a refuge and place of prayer. In the following centuries, the village became a thriving centre for silk production – so much so that the etymology of its name derives from the Greek Boβὸγγες, ‘land of silkworms’ – and for mining and metallurgy.
Strolling through the narrow streets of the historic centre, you can still breathe in the atmosphere of times gone by: stone houses, panoramic views of the valley, shops and evidence of a hard-working past. The remains of ancient ironworks, mines and mills testify to the ability of the people of Bivongo to make the most of every resource in the area. A symbol of this is the ‘do’ Regnante’ watermill, one of 23 mills that used the waters of the Stilaro and Melodari streams.
Spirituality and silence: the mystical heart of Bivongi
Among the most iconic sites is the Monastery of Saint John Theristis, an extraordinary example of Norman-Byzantine architecture that combines Eastern and Western influences. Today it is the seat of Greek Orthodox monasticism and has been included in the UNESCO candidate list since 2024.
Visiting the monastery means immersing yourself in a suspended atmosphere, made up of silence, liturgical chants and light filtering through the ancient walls. Here, spirituality and nature interact in perfect harmony, contributing to the quality of life that makes Bivongi a special place.
Not far away are the remains of the Grangia dei Santissimi Apostoli, a fortified agricultural centre dating back to 1094 linked to the Certosa di Santo Stefano del Bosco, testimony to the strategic importance of the valley in the Middle Ages.
Unspoilt nature and beneficial waters
The landscape surrounding Bivongi is a veritable treasure trove of biodiversity. The Stilaro Valley, with its woods and rivers, offers trekking routes and views of rare beauty.
Don’t miss the excursion to the Marmarico Waterfalls, the highest in Calabria, with a drop of over 110 metres. The path through the woods, with its breathtaking views and pure air, offers a rejuvenating experience in every season.
The theme of wellness also recurs in the Bagni di Guida, a spa complex built around sulphurous springs known since ancient times as ‘Acque Sante’ (Holy Waters). The natural pools, surrounded by greenery, are an evocative corner where water and nature meet in perfect balance.
At the entrance to the Parco delle Serre, Nicholas Green Park offers ponds, picnic areas and paths leading to waterfalls.
Culture, traditions and sense of community
Bivongi is not only nature and spirituality, but also living culture. The MacAM – Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museum of Rural Life “A Lumera” recount two complementary souls: openness to the world and the memory of one’s roots.
The patron saint festivals dedicated to Santa Maria Mamma Nostra and San Giovanni Battista Decollato, the Wine Festival and the charming Mercato della Badia market enliven the village throughout the year, strengthening that sense of belonging that contributes to collective serenity.
Bivongi, where living is an art form
Visiting Bivongi means rediscovering a way of life based on balance: between body and spirit, between tradition and modernity, between man and nature.
It is a village that does not just show itself off, but invites you to slow down, listen and share.
Here, the ‘elixir of long life’ is not a closely guarded secret, but a daily routine made up of pure air, sincere relationships, spirituality and good food.
And perhaps, after visiting it, you will understand why longevity in Bivongi is not a myth, but a natural consequence of an authentic lifestyle.

Flavours of the land and heroic wine
Longevity also comes from the table. Bivongese cuisine is the result of rural tradition and the Mediterranean diet: simple, genuine, rich in authentic flavours.
Specialities include:
-homemade pasta made with ampelodesma stems
-stockfish with potatoes and olives
-wild fennel-flavoured cured meats
-fresh cheeses
-zeppole and festive desserts
At Christmas, Pitta di San Martino is prepared, while at Easter the traditional “cuzzupa” is made. In the bakeries, you can taste the famous amaretti di Bivongi.
The pride of the local food and wine scene is the Bivongi DOC, heroically cultivated on terraces overlooking the river. Recognised in 1996, it is the youngest DOC in Calabria and represents the agricultural soul and identity of the village.
