Acquaviva Picena

Located a short distance from the beautiful beaches of San Benedetto del Tronto, Acquaviva Picena is an enchanting village that stands on a scenic hillside. Its location offers visitors a spectacular view of the majestic peaks of the Apennine mountains, including the Vettore, Gran Sasso and Maiella. This small town, awarded the Orange Flag for its tourist quality, is a place where history, culture and traditions are woven into a fascinating mosaic of experiences.

A journey through time

The beating heart of Acquaviva Picena is undoubtedly its Rocca, an authentic masterpiece of military architecture dating back to the 14th century, when it was erected by the noble Acquaviva family. Rebuilt in 1474 under the direction of architect Baccio Pontelli, the fortress has an irregular quadrilateral plan that frames a large central courtyard, with a well that testifies to the hydraulic ingenuity of the time. The apexes of the fortress are reinforced by towers, most notably the keep, a full 22 meters high, which provides a breathtaking view beyond the walls.

Inside the fortress, two vaulted rooms, connected by a masonry staircase, house an interesting display of ancient weapons, making the visit not only aesthetically fascinating but also rich in historical content. From here, one can descend to the Piazza del Forte, which serves as a scenic stage for the fortress, with its low houses arranged in an elegant semicircle. The village streets, parallel and harmonious, are connected by stepped ramps, such as the picturesque Vicolo del Trabucco, a real journey back in time where war machines were once kept.

Moving toward the center of the village, one comes across Piazza San Nicolò, the village’s center of gravity. This elongated square is framed between two hills and overlooks the 16th-century church of San Nicolò and the Civic Tower, which tells stories of a glorious past. Not far away, the Rossi Panelli House adds a touch of elegance to the local architecture, making the place even more fascinating.

In addition to the historic center, Acquaviva Picena boasts several remarkable religious buildings. The Church of San Francesco, with its adjoining convent, represents the oldest Franciscan foundation in the Marche region, although the history of this community dates back to the time of St. Francis of Assisi, who was invited by the Acquaviva family. Other churches of value include that of San Lorenzo, which houses a significant 17th-century retablo, and the church of Santa Maria delle Palme, which reflects the spirituality of the place.

Traditions and Crafts

A fascinating aspect of Acquaviva is its constant adherence to tradition. Here they passionately practice the production of straw baskets, an art that has been handed down from generation to generation. The “Pajarola” Museum is a real gem for those who wish to understand these traditions. Collections of baskets, kitchen utensils and dolls created from natural materials offer important evidence of an art that is part of the daily life of the village.

Tastes and events of Acquaviva

No visit to Acquaviva Picena can be considered complete without a stop to savor local specialties. Cheeses, sweet peaches, frustingo (a typical Marche dessert made with dried fruit and figs) and fine wines such as Rosso Piceno DOC and Offida DOC are just some of the delights awaiting visitors.

Not to be missed is the annual Sponsalia event, which is a historical re-enactment of the wedding between Forasteria d’Acquaviva and Rainaldo di Brunforte in 1234. This festival, held between July and August, in addition to being a time of celebration, culminates in the contest of the Palio del Duca, an enthralling tournament that brings the village’s medieval traditions back to life.
