Fight for the Sword of Contrari
The Fight for the Sword of Contrari is one of the most exciting historical re-enactments in Emilia-Romagna, an event that brings the village of Savignano sul Panaro every year, taking it back in time to 1409.
The event commemorates the donation of the fiefdom of Savignano by Marquis Niccolò III d’Este to his captain Uguccione dei Contrari, lord of Vignola, who had conquered the territory from the Savignani family. This historical episode is the narrative heart of an intense and spectacular two-day event, scheduled for 19 and 20 September.
During the event, the village is transformed into an authentic medieval setting: the court of the Marquis d’Este comes to life with ladies, knights, jesters and travellers, while the squares host duels, shows, medieval markets, military camps and demonstrations of ancient crafts. Great attention is paid to the historical accuracy of the costumes and reconstructions, offering the public a total immersion in 15th-century life.
The highlight is the Palio, which sees the six districts of the village – Castelli, Garofano, Doccia, Magazzeno, Mulino and Formica – compete in games of skill and strength. Only one can win the coveted Spada dei Contrari (Sword of Contrari), a symbol of honour and supremacy for the entire year.
The Lotta per la Spada dei Contrari is much more than a re-enactment: it is a collective experience that combines history, spectacle and community pride, transforming Savignano sul Panaro into a lively and vibrant medieval stage.
