Marriage of the Sea
This event ended on 17 May 2026.
The Marriage of the Sea is one of the oldest and most evocative events on the Adriatic Riviera, a symbolic ceremony that renews the deep bond between the town of Cervia and the sea every year.
Its origins date back to the Middle Ages and tradition has it that it all began in 1445, when the Bishop of Cervia, caught in a storm at sea, threw his ring into the waves asking for divine protection. Since then, every year, the town has celebrated this ritual with a solemn ceremony that combines history, faith and maritime identity.
The most eagerly awaited moment is the throwing of the ring into the sea: after a historical procession through the town centre with participants in period costume and civil and religious authorities, the ring is entrusted to the waters of the Adriatic from the canal port. Immediately afterwards, young participants dive in to retrieve it in a symbolic ‘challenge’ that ignites the enthusiasm of the public.
The Marriage of the Sea is not only a ritual, but also a popular festival. During the days of the event, Cervia comes alive with shows, music, food stands and cultural initiatives that celebrate the maritime traditions and historical heritage of the city. The port and the streets of the city centre become the beating heart of an event that involves residents and visitors alike.
More than just a re-enactment, the Marriage of the Sea is an act of love for the sea, an element that has shaped the history, economy and identity of Cervia. An event that renews an ancient bond every year, transforming the town into a stage of emotions, memories and collective participation.
