Dinner at Messer Giovanni’s – Medieval dinners

“Dinner at Messer Giovanni’s” is one of Tuscany’s most fascinating historical re-enactments, a journey back in time that transports the ancient village of Certaldo to the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. The 2026 edition takes place on Saturday 6 and Saturday 13 June, transforming Via Boccaccio into an enchanting open-air banquet hall.

The event recreates a typical medieval dinner inspired by an ancient tradition: when Florence appointed a Vicar of the Republic in Certaldo, a grand banquet was organised along the village’s main street to mark St John’s Day (24 June). Nobles, dignitaries and landowners of the Vicariate would gather for a solemn dinner, served by the common people and enlivened by songs, dances, bonfires and ‘mirabilia’.

Since 2000, “A cena da Messer Giovanni” has celebrated this historical event and also pays tribute to the famous hospitality of Giovanni Boccaccio, who welcomed friends and scholars into his family home in Certaldo, creating veritable cultural salons. The initiative stems from meticulous research into the food of the era and the methods of service, to offer an experience as faithful as possible: earthenware dishes, wooden tableware, spoons instead of forks, and a menu inspired by medieval cuisine.

The dinner takes place at a very long table seating around 380 people, lit by torchlight, creating an intimate and spectacular atmosphere. The diners are served by members of the Elitropia association, dressed in authentic medieval costumes and taking on the roles of cooks and servants.

There is no shortage of entertainment during the evening: acrobats, jugglers and performers enliven the banquet, with a show by the Compagnia Drago Nero, which accompanies the dinner with music, skill and the charm of bygone times. As a gift to participants, a set of earthenware plates and wooden cutlery is also presented, a symbolic memento of the experience.
