Living Checkers Game
The Living Checkers Game of Castelvetro returns on 12 and 13 September 2026 to the picturesque village of Castelvetro di Modena, bringing the charm of the Renaissance back to life through entertainment, history and tradition.
For over 50 years, beneath the two towers and in the picturesque chequerboard-patterned square, an extraordinary living draughts game has taken shape: young girls and boys become pawns and knights, whilst queens, knights and bishops in Renaissance costume re-enact a feast organised by the noble Rangoni family in honour of Torquato Tasso.
According to tradition, it was in Castelvetro that the famous poet found refuge in 1564, drawing inspiration for some verses of *Jerusalem Delivered*. This historical link makes the event even more fascinating and rich in meaning.
The event is a truly immersive spectacle: as well as the game of draughts, the audience can enjoy aerial and vertical dance, fire shows and artistic performances that bring the village to life. Guiding spectators on this journey through time is the narrating voice of Simone Maretti, who accompanies every moment with intensity and engagement.
The art of tailoring also takes centre stage: the splendid Renaissance costumes, entirely hand-embroidered, are crafted by volunteers from the Dama Vivente Association and represent a unique heritage, also on display at the Fili d’oro museum in the Palazzo.
The Living Checkers Game is much more than a historical re-enactment: it is an experience that combines theatre, art and memory, transforming Castelvetro into a Renaissance stage capable of captivating spectators of all ages.
