Feast of Saint Onofrio
The Feast of Saint Onofrio is one of the most important religious events for the community of Casalvecchio Siculo. The hermit saint, patron of the village, is deeply rooted in the history and popular devotion of the village, and every year his liturgical feast day, celebrated on 12 June, draws the faithful and visitors in an atmosphere of intense participation.
Preparations for the festival begin nine days beforehand with the traditional novena, during which the community gathers in the Church of Sant’Onofrio for moments of prayer and hymns dedicated to the saint. This period is a time of contemplation and spirituality that deeply engages the village’s inhabitants.
The most eagerly awaited moment of the celebration is the procession of the statue of Saint Onofrio, affectionately known in the local dialect as “Santu n’Ofriu a mensu bustu”. This is a statue depicting the saint from the head down to the hips, dating back to the 15th century, and cherished with great devotion by the Casalvetina community. The statue is carried in procession through the streets of the village, accompanied by the faithful and the town band, whose solemn music helps to create an evocative and emotionally charged atmosphere.
Along the procession route, the village streets come alive with songs, prayers and gestures of popular devotion. The festival is not merely a religious event, but also a moment of strong collective identity, in which tradition, faith and memory intertwine.
The celebration of Saint Onofrio thus continues to be one of the most vibrant symbols of the culture and spirituality of Casalvecchio Siculo, preserving intact over time the bond between the patron saint and the community that has honoured him for centuries.
